<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Part 7 of the July blog series on <em>The Growth Ethos</em>. <a href="https://ae719526.sibforms.com/serve/MUIFAMDVP9VXw2JtZ9uzpN82XT7r6vCNnztbhCB72dvFuRDKiGFHYnpL9U8KsB0rgg2q-YAljAx1WfOVz0Y9fnzPvJwwep2j9LlYOUi5vtUyGPuyVhyMYlWlKQ9_1pZD8dZQ53cPQx8OCWuZ_Y93d6XkaCMVljV0Ruz0vLfpwjpAFdGVUwFb5Jxk4kAvvy8D7DjY_bFxD_r4xy7s" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Subscribe to follow it</a>.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">B2B growth doesn’t begin with paid ads. It starts with trust in private channels—a report dropped into Slack, a product link shared in WhatsApp, or a recommendation inside a founders’ forum.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>&#8220;If your metrics look good but your leads feel cold, you’re likely missing the conversations that matter most.</em>&#8220;</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Here’s how sustainable brands gain traction in the unseen corners of sharing.</strong></p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1000" height="1000" src="https://www.saminghiasi.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Where-B2B-Decisions-Really-Happen-in-2025-Samin-Ghiasi-Paris.jpg" alt="Diagram titled “Where B2B Decisions Really Happen” shows the overlap between visible marketing (ads, blog posts, social media) and invisible sharing (Slack, email, private groups), highlighting trust, referrals, and values as the connecting points around the buyer." class="wp-image-945" srcset="https://www.saminghiasi.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Where-B2B-Decisions-Really-Happen-in-2025-Samin-Ghiasi-Paris.jpg 1000w, https://www.saminghiasi.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Where-B2B-Decisions-Really-Happen-in-2025-Samin-Ghiasi-Paris-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.saminghiasi.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Where-B2B-Decisions-Really-Happen-in-2025-Samin-Ghiasi-Paris-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.saminghiasi.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Where-B2B-Decisions-Really-Happen-in-2025-Samin-Ghiasi-Paris-768x768.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" data-mwl-img-id="945" /></figure>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Why invisible referrals are reshaping B2B</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dark social describes content dropped into private, untrackable channels: Slack, WhatsApp, email, or internal DMs. It shows up in Google Analytics as “direct” traffic—but it carries real intent.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>No tracking codes. No referral tags.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>A cautionary example? Astronomer. </strong>When their CEO and head of HR were captured on a Coldplay kiss‑cam, it wasn’t just external media that blew up. It was private chatter. WhatsApp groups, ESG forums, LinkedIn DMs—all amplifying reputational risk before any public crisis management began.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Astronomer responded with a tongue‑in‑cheek video featuring Gwyneth Paltrow, hilarious in concept, strategic in deflection [4].</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to Forrester, 82% of B2B buyers trust information from internal colleagues and management far more than external marketing content or social platforms [1]. <strong>These invisible exchanges are where decisions form, or fall apart.</strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Why sustainable brands thrive in hidden networks</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Backchannel buzz thrives on quiet resonance:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A procurement head flicks your ESG scorecard into their team Slack</li>

<li>A sustainability director forwards your case study to a colleague</li>

<li>An operations lead drops your framework into closed channels</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Research consistently shows that <strong>most B2B buyers begin their journey through referrals</strong> rather than direct vendor outreach [2]. <strong>72% of buyers</strong> choose vendors aligned with their company’s ESG values [3].</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. How to design content that moves in silence</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can’t measure dark social directly, but you can optimise for it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>a. Make content forwardable.</strong><br>Frameworks, checklists, case studies—tactical assets readers want to share with colleagues.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>b. Signal the mention.</strong><br>Phrases like “Worth forwarding to your ESG lead?” invite internal sharing more than scripting a call‑to‑action ever could.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>c. Track indirect impact.</strong><br>Unexplained direct traffic spikes often trace back to internal networks. Use forms or survey prompts: &#8220;How did you hear about us?&#8221;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>d. Show up inside small, curated groups.</strong><br>Slack channels for sustainable procurement. Invite-only forums for climate leaders. Instead of broadcasting, listen and contribute value.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>e. Nurture real influencers.</strong><br><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Identify people who frequently refer you</span>. Send them early access or behind‑the‑scenes content. Thank them personally. <strong>Build genuine rapport</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s all about making yourself easy to recommend.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. What this looks like behind the scenes</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A clean‑tech SaaS offers an emissions reporting checklist. One subscriber forwards it to their legal team. That team posts it in a Discord channel. <strong>Within days, three demo requests arrive—none tagged to a campaign.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another example, when a circular economy startup joins peer-to-peer threads: a participant quietly mentions their tool to colleagues. The following week, two procurement teams reach out. <strong>No ads</strong>. Just value shared privately.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These paths don’t show up in attribution models, but they deliver impact all the same.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. How to measure what can’t be tracked</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dark social doesn’t fit neatly into traditional funnels; you can still gauge its power.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Monitor branded search trends</strong>: an uptick after content drops or podcast appearances is a signal.</li>

<li><strong>Ask directly</strong>: in discovery calls or form fields, ask people how they heard about you. Include “someone shared this with me.”</li>

<li><strong>Track engagement quality</strong>: expect longer session durations and faster progression after dark-social-driven visits.</li>

<li><strong>Survey customers post-conversion</strong>: ask if a colleague recommended you.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t ignore the shadow funnel. Let it inform how you build growth.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>6. What to take from this</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unseen sharing is where modern B2B decisions happen.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>77.5% of B2B buyers</strong> forward privately [1]</li>

<li><strong>84% trust peer referrals over brand content [2]</strong></li>

<li><strong>Buyers increasingly favour vendors aligned with their ESG goals—especially in procurement and compliance teams.</strong></li>
</ul>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>“When I launched a sustainability audit template last year, it didn’t go viral. But a week later, I saw a spike in direct traffic and inbound messages from legal and operations teams. </em><br><br><em>Turns out someone had dropped it into a climate messaging platform. That one anonymous share led to three qualified leads and a podcast invitation. <span style="text-decoration: underline;">None of it tracked, yet all of it mattered.</span>”</em></p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If your content, product, and values can&#8217;t earn credibility in closed networks, you won’t earn deals either.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>REFERENCES</strong></p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>“Fast growth is easy to sell. Meaningful, resilient growth—the kind that lasts—is what actually matters now.”</em></p>
</blockquote>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Growth has evolved. So must we.</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let’s face it, growth marketing used to be about scale at any cost. Run ads, launch popups, push users through funnels.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>But we’ve changed. </strong>Your audience has changed. And in the shadow of climate urgency, greenwashing fatigue, and digital burnout, your growth strategy must mature, too.</p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow">
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Not just how fast can we grow, but how fairly, how sustainably, and how durably?”</p>
</blockquote>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to Deloitte, 63% of European consumers now prefer brands with verified environmental impact over legacy leaders (Deloitte, <a href="https://www.deloitte.com/us/en/insights/topics/environmental-social-governance/sustainable-consumption-trends.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>2025 Global Sustainability Consumer Survey</em></a>).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Circular economy style</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If we’re serious about sustainability, we need to rethink more than just our messaging. We need to reimagine the system itself.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Instead of extract → convert → churn</li>

<li>Build systems that <strong>recirculate value</strong>, <strong>minimise waste</strong>, and <strong>optimise retention</strong></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2025, the best growth marketers aren’t funnel-obsessed—they’re ecosystem builders.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Example: <em>The Loop</em></strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take a company like <a href="https://www.wearephenix.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Phenix</strong></a> (France). They fight food waste by redistributing unsold goods to NGOs and consumers. Their growth isn’t just visible in dashboards—it lives in <strong>impact feedback</strong>, <strong>community loops</strong>, and <strong>storytelling that sustains trust</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s how a circular growth loop can look:</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Educate:</strong> Share content, tools, or newsletters that create awareness and build shared values. <br><em>Example: “Decode your supply chain emissions in 30 seconds.”</em><br></li>

<li><strong>Engage:</strong> Offer free trials or diagnostics. Make it easy, data-rich, and respectful. <br><em>Example: “Estimate how much CO₂ you could offset by adjusting X input.”</em><br></li>

<li><strong>Exchange</strong>: Capture insight, not just emails. Ask questions to learn what your audience cares about and create better products and content. <br><em>Example: “What’s your biggest procurement risk today?”</em><br></li>

<li><strong>Enrich:</strong> Show the user their impact. <em>“By switching to us, you helped stabilise 3 commodity prices and saved 2.4t of CO₂.”</em><br></li>

<li><strong>Extend</strong>: Close the loop with co-creation or advocacy. <em>“Want to share your impact story with our community?”</em></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This isn’t just a funnel, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">it’s a system designed to regenerate value</span>.</strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. The new KPIs of conscious growth</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Legacy metrics no longer tell the full story</span>. In 2025, high-performing teams track <strong>hybrid indicators</strong> that reflect both business and impact performance.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table class="has-fixed-layout"><thead><tr><th>Old Metric</th><th>New Metric</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)</td><td><strong>CAC + Environmental Cost Index</strong></td></tr><tr><td>Bounce Rate</td><td><strong>Time-to-Value (TTV)</strong></td></tr><tr><td>LTV (Customer Lifetime Value)</td><td><strong>LTV x Referral Multiplier</strong></td></tr><tr><td>Engagement Rate</td><td><strong>Value Density (impact per click/visit)</strong></td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tools like <a href="https://scope3.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Scope3</strong></a>, <a href="https://usefathom.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Fathom</strong></a>, and <a href="https://matomo.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>Matomo</strong></a> help measure not just user behaviour, but do so in ways that respect privacy, consent, and environmental impact.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to BCG and Ad Net Zero, carbon KPIs are expected to become standard benchmarks across major EU ad networks by late 2025 (BCG x Ad Net Zero, <em><a href="https://www.bcg.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Sustainable Media Report</a></em>).</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>4. Winning tactics in 2025</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Conscious B2B marketers aren’t just polishing mission statements. They’re upgrading their playbooks:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Ghostbuster-level traffic cleanup</strong>: Filter out bot traffic, click farms, and fake engagement. Focus on high-intent, real users. Better funnels. Better data. Less digital noise.</li>

<li><strong>Impact-layered attribution</strong>: Don’t just ask which channel converts. <br>Ask: “Which channel brings aligned, long-term customers who care about what we stand for?”</li>

<li><strong>Carbon-budgeted campaigns</strong>: Some teams now assign emissions limits to ad launches. <br><em>Example: “We’ll greenlight this if we stay under 20g CO₂ per lead.”</em> <br><br>According to Scope3, programmatic ad emissions can vary by over 25x depending on format, publisher, and placement (Scope3, <em><a href="https://scope3.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">State of Sustainable Advertising 2025</a></em>).</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">These are signs of where growth is headed</span>: less waste, more resonance, and performance that earns its keep.</strong></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>5. Real growth = shared growth</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you stop seeing users as data points and start treating them as <span style="text-decoration: underline;">collaborators</span>, everything changes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a world where attention is scarce, <strong>honesty scales</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Where distrust is high, <strong>impact wins</strong>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And where resources are limited, <strong>circular systems outperform linear ones</strong>—every time.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><strong>WHAT’S NEXT IN THIS SERIES</strong></strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post marks the beginning of <strong><em>The Growth Ethos</em></strong>, a 10-part blog series <span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">that explores</span> how to build&nbsp;resilient and<strong> sustainable growth strategies</strong> for 2025 and beyond.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Coming next:</strong><br><a href="https://www.saminghiasi.com/why-vanity-metrics-are-dying-and-what-to-track-instead/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">→ <em>Why Vanity Metrics Are Dying (and What to Track Instead)</em></a></p>
